America's Favorite Teacher Contest

Updated: Feb 22

Bill Nye and Reader's Digest have joined together to create a contest that puts the spotlight on teachers. I am a teacher, so why not give it a try! I am excited to be one of the contestants this year that is looking for your vote.

Teaching is one of many vocations that is pivotal to the success of each generation and to the benefit of our society. However, not having been in the education world for the first part of my career, I am learning a lot about what being a teacher means and the joys and stresses that come with it. In my short time as a teacher I have taught virtually (on the computer) and in-person. I have been in 3 different schools (4 if you include Summer School). I have taught multiple grade levels and subjects. One thing I have learned as a teacher is how things change from year to year. Nothing is guaranteed. Flexibility and filling the gaps are essential skills in this environment. I have also learned that being a teacher can be extremely lonely. Yes, we work with other teachers and staff, yet for the most part we are in our rooms with our class doing our thing. We have our classes and our responsibilities and preparations and committees. It is very easy to become overwhelmed and lost. Not to mention all the things and life outside of the vocation: Family and friends and other jobs, etc.

That is why this competition is so amazing and important. Yes, I would love to win! Taking a trip to Hawaii, winning $25,000, and being highlighted in Reader's Digest would be awesome! Yes, you will be seeing me and my face a lot more on your social media feeds than you are accustomed to (Sorry...Not Sorry). However, whether I win or not, my goal is to Highlight, Honor, and make Seen All of the teachers out there. You are Important! You are Amazing! And you deserve more.

Most teachers I know did not go into this field for the money or the praise. It was for the impact and change that can be made in the life of others. We all are where we are because of our teachers. So, thank you to all of you who do what you do and are not seen. But let's change that. Let's let the world see the impact you have!
